Work Experience Requirements

In addition to successfully completing an FPSC Accredited Education Program and the CFP Examination, candidates must also meet work experience requirements to be eligible for licensing. Candidates who qualified to write the CFP Examination through completion of an Accredited Education Program must provide evidence of completion of two years of qualifying work experience. Candidates who qualified for the CFP Examination through the Approved Prior Credentials Policy (by holding one of the specified professional or educational credentials) are required to provide evidence of completion of three years of qualifying work experience when applying for the CFP Examination. Upon registration for the CFP Examination, the three years of qualifying work experience must be completed and approved.

Timeliness of Experience

For those candidates who qualified for the CFP Examination through the completion of an accredited education program, qualifying work experience can be earned prior to, concurrent with, or subsequent to education and examination requirements. However, experience earned more than five years prior to or five years subsequent to passing the CFP Examination is generally not acceptable.

Failure to Complete Work Experience

Candidates who fail to complete their two-year work experience requirement within five years of passing the CFP Examination must re-qualify by once again completing an accredited education program and passing the current CFP Examination.

Qualifying Work Experience

For purposes of this requirement, qualifying work experience is based on a 35-hour work week and is defined as full-time (or equivalent part-time) personal financial planning related employment or self-employment for compensation. In the performance of their employment responsibilities, the candidate must apply the job-related knowledge, skills, attitudes and judgements as this experience may be gained in the performance of the following activities:

  • Financial Planning
  • Financial Management
  • Asset Management
  • Insurance Planning/Risk Management
  • Tax Planning
  • Retirement/Pension Planning
  • Estate Planning
  • Investment Planning
  • Teaching at a post-secondary level
  • Portfolio Management

The above list is not all-inclusive and all work experience submissions are subject to approval. Financial Planners Standards Council (FPSC) will consider other relevant experience upon request. Work experience gained outside of Canada will be accepted if it can be verified that it is equivalent to comparable experience within Canada. FPSC reserves the right to require that a minimum period of work experience is gained within Canada.

Verification of Experience

With the submission of the Application for CFP Designation, the candidate must provide a letter signed by his or her current supervisor or manager, providing details of the candidate's current position, nature of activities, work start date and the signatory's contact information. The candidate also must submit an up-to-date résumé detailing previous work experience. Candidates must include specific start and completion dates. The information supplied may be subject to verification by FPSC.

Review and Revision

FPSC will monitor and review the nature of the work experience submitted by candidates.
