FPSC Adds Two Registered Education Programs, Renews Third

April 3, 2002, Toronto - At its March 21st meeting, Financial Planners Standards Council (FPSC) Board of Directors approved two new education programs, and renewed an existing program, which satisfy the education requirement for the Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) designation. These programs bring the total number of directly registered programs to 25 offered by 20 different institutions.

In the fall of 2002, Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, ON, will implement a new 4-year, full-time BBA Honours Degree with a Specialization in Financial Planning. Laurier's existing Diploma in Financial Planning program was renewed and will now be offered at the university's main campus as a part-time, evening program.

The other new program, the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) Financial Planning program, sponsored by Dalhousie University, Halifax, is now being offered by distance learning.

There are currently 88 programs offered at 66 institutions across Canada that are registered directly with FPSC or have entered into academic partnerships with The Canadian Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (CAIFA) or The Canadian Institute of Financial Planning (CIFP).

The general requirements for registering a program are:

  • The program must be a certificate/degree or professional designation program.
  • FPSC requires a statement of objectives for the program.
  • The curriculum must contain courses that cover the current CFP Examination Syllabus.
  • FPSC requires documentation about the qualifications of the educators responsible for developing and/or teaching each course and other components of the program.
  • FPSC requires an outline of other resources available to students.

Programs are approved for a three-year term.

Financial Planners Standards Council is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to benefiting and protecting the Canadian consumer by establishing and enforcing education, examination, experience and ethics requirements for financial planners who choose to earn the CFP designation. FPSC is the Canadian licensor of the internationally recognized CFP certification marks currently used by more than 14,000 planners in Canada, and 63,000 planners in 17 countries around the world.
