OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF INTERNATIONAL CFP® CERTIFICATION STANDARDS-SETTING BODY,
FINANCIAL PLANNING STANDARDS BOARD LTD. (FPSB) IS NEXT STEP IN GLOBAL EVOLUTION OF FINANCIAL PLANNING PROFESSION
Toronto, Dec. 2, 2004 —
The evolution of the financial planning profession took another significant step forward this fall with the official launch of Financial Planning Standards Board Ltd., the non-profit standards-setting body that will proactively guide the global development and promotion of international standards for financial planning professionals.
Financial Planners Standards Council (FPSC), whose mission is to benefit and protect the public by leading the development of the financial planning profession in Canada, joined a growing network of non-profit organizations offering CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification internationally to establish FPSB.
Canada's FPSC and the 16 non-profit associations that together manage the CFP certification process for CFP professionals in 17 countries have joined as members of FPSB. The new international organization is purchasing the CFP certification and service marks outside the U.S. and its territories from Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. (CFP Board), Denver, Colorado. FPSB and CFP Board recognize their shared interest and responsibility in advancing the standards of the CFP certification program in their respective territories and have agreed to cooperate in this effort. There are currently more than 90,000 CFP professionals internationally.
"As CFP certification gains ground internationally, the commitment of the FPSB affiliates and the CFP Board to work together to preserve the integrity of this global brand is increasingly important. FPSB will strive to work with and attract the best and brightest from all regions to help us develop a financial planning profession respected everywhere," says FPSC President Don Johnston.
Recognized for the success and integrity of its domestic CFP certification program, Canada's FPSC will continue to play an influential role internationally. Numbering more than 16,000, CFP professionals in Canada represent the largest proportion of CFP professionals among the FPSB affiliates and the largest portion on a domestic per capita basis in the world.
"Our Canadian organization is respected throughout the international CFP community for the integrity of our standards and certification process, and for the ingenuity and effectiveness of our branding of the CFP marks. FPSC will continue to be looked to for leadership, especially during the initial years of establishing the role and work of this new international organization," says Mr. Johnston. Mr. Johnston and Canada's FPSC Board Vice-Chair Margaret Koniuck, CFP, will represent Canada on the 2005 nine-member FPSB Board of Directors.
Consistent with others in FPSB affiliate countries and in the United States, CFP professionals in Canada meet competency and ethics standards that are based on a platform of education, examination, experience and ethics requirements (the 4Es). The international CFP certification standards for each affiliate are appropriately developed to meet domestic marketplace, regulatory and educational needs and to ensure that CFP professionals meet the highest national standards for the delivery of financial planning.
FPSB manages, develops and operates certification, education and related programs for financial planning organizations so that they may benefit and protect the global community by establishing, upholding and promoting worldwide professional standards in financial planning. The commitment to excellence of FPSB and each of its affiliates is represented by the marks of financial planning professional distinction - CFP, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER and .
