CANADIAN DON JOHNSTON APPOINTED AS 2003 CHAIR-ELECT OF INTERNATIONAL ADVISORY BOARD FOR CFP® CERTIFICATION WORLDWIDE

November 6, 2002, Toronto — Don Johnston has been appointed as 2003 chair-elect of the advisory body of the new international entity that will oversee the Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) certification worldwide. Recently named Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB), this entity and its new advisory body, FPSB Council, will be formed early next year. A joint task force of the International CFP Council and Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. accepted the new name and introduced a formal structure for the new entity at a recent meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Johnston is president of Financial Planners Standards Council in Canada (FPSC) and will serve as chair of the (international) FPSB Council in 2004.

"We are excited to have such an experienced individual play a significant role during this historic globalization effort of the CFP marks," said International CFP Council Chair Patti Houlihan, CFP.

"Under Don's leadership, Canada has grown to be the second largest community of CFP professionals worldwide. His vision, experience and dedication to the CFP standard of excellence will be invaluable to our efforts to further the CFP mark internationally," added Houlihan.

"I am both honoured and excited to join the FPSB Council as chair-elect. The work we do internationally will strengthen the value of the CFP mark in Canada for consumers, financial professionals and all stakeholders in our financial services communities," said Johnston. "Likewise, the successes we continue to build upon in Canada will contribute substantially to our international efforts."

In Canada, Johnston was instrumental in the creation of FPSC in 1995. FPSC has grown to be the second largest organization in the CFP Council. There are now more CFP professionals per capita in Canada than any other country - with more than 14,000 CFP professionals working in every segment of the financial services industry and servicing Canadians in virtually every province. An additional 14,000 professionals are currently working towards their CFP designation.

Internationally, Johnston has served as an International CFP Council delegate since 1996, was chair of the Internationalization Task Force in 1997 and chair of the New Affiliate and Peer Review Committee, 2000-2002. An international assembly of financial planning bodies, the International CFP Council was founded in 1990 to promote the professionalism of individuals and organizations offering financial planning services and to ensure that such services are offered in an ethical and competent manner throughout the world. The International CFP Council has members and associate members from 19 countries. Council members have authorized more than 72,000 individuals to use the CFP marks worldwide. It was also announced that John S. Carpenter, past chair of FPSC in Canada, was elected to the inaugural FPSB Board of Directors, and will fill one of the four international directors' seats beginning 2003.

Financial Planners Standards Council is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to benefiting and protecting the Canadian consumer by establishing and enforcing education, examination, experience and ethics requirements for financial planners who choose to earn the CFP designation. There are currently more than 14,000 planners licensed to use the CFP marks in Canada.
