We told you it was coming. Now we're ready to get it off the ground. We're expanding the online Learning Centre to include a Feature Article of the Month. The Learning Centre already holds numerous articles written by CFP professionals, but starting in November we will highlight one feature article a month. It will be posted on the website in a prominent position and the author of the featured article will be rewarded with a cash prize of $500.

Here is how it works:

  1. FPSC will request articles on specific topics based on what is lacking on the Learning Centre and on the recommendations from our editorial advisory committee.
  2. We'll put out a call for two articles in each E-Blast News (every two months).
  3. Articles should be from 500 to 750 words.
  4. The advisory committee will vet submissions:
    • Decide if the articles are helpful to our website browsers
      • Meet their information needs
      • Are timely
      • Are relevant
      • Demonstrate the breadth and depth of the knowledge and skills of CFP professionals
    • Decide which articles will be featured each month.
  5. We'll post selected feature articles in a prominent position.
  6. We'll add articles not selected to be featured but chosen for publication to the appropriate Learning Centre section.
  7. We'll award the author of each article selected for the Feature of the Month a $500 cash prize.
  8. We'll review all articles submitted to Blake Glendenning at bglendenning@cfp-ca.org by the 15th of the month for consideration as the feature article for the following month.

Here are the topics for the next couple of months:

For the November Feature - General Retirement Planning - due by October 15
For the December Feature - Budgeting - due by November 15

If you would like to be part of the editorial advisory committee, contact Blake at the above address.

We will accept article submissions at any time but they may not be eligible for the Feature of the Month.

The Learning Centre is an online resource for consumers. Organized by topic, it contains articles, a digest of books and links.

FPSC is continuing its call for qualified CFP professionals to serve as members of Hearing Panels as prescribed by FPSC's Disciplinary Rules & Procedures.

Hearing Panels are responsible for reviewing charges prepared by FPSC's Director - Ethics, Legal & Regulatory Affairs against CFP professionals that have allegedly breached FPSC's Code of Ethics, or in the case of CFP Examination candidates, that have allegedly engaged in misconduct during the CFP Examination process.

Hearing Panel volunteers should have an understanding of FPSC's Code of Ethics. In addition, volunteers must complete a detailed Conflict of Interest Questionnaire and sign a Confidentiality Statement prior to service and be prepared to discuss issues and make informed decisions at hearings.

Those interested in this opportunity should send an updated resume and cover letter to Heather Terrence at hterrence@cfp-ca.org.

Please note that FPSC requires national volunteer representation, as hearings will be held across Canada.

For more information, please call Heather Terrence at 416.593.8587 x231 (toll-free 1.800.305.9886 x231) or by e-mail at hterrence@cfp-ca.org.

The final draft of the CFP Financial Planning Practice Standards is now available for viewing on the FPSC website. The comment deadline is October 31, 2004.

Once final comments have been received and reviewed, we'll release the final Standards in January 2005, for phase-in during the 2005/2006 licence year.

To view the latest draft of the Practice Standards, visit the FPSC website.

In an effort to continually improve the Continuing Education (CE) Program, FPSC is pleased to announce the following NEW Continuing Education Policy.

Effective for the 2004 calendar year, CFP professionals who earn more technical credits than required for the current calendar year will be able to "carry over" these excess technical CE credits and use them to meet their CE requirements in the following calendar year. A maximum of 20 technical credits can be claimed for "carry over" and they must be used in the next calendar year.

This policy applies ONLY to technical credits. Excess general credits CANNOT be claimed for "carry over" to next calendar year.

For more information regarding this new CE policy (and all CE Policies), please visit the FPSC website.

New online poll questions will be added to the website October 1. Here they are:

The CFP professional poll asks, "Our 2003 consumer survey showed that 75% of Canadians link having a financial plan/good financial planning to their well-being. Has the number of clients asking you for a financial plan (without being prompted) increased in the past three years?

The online consumer poll asks, "Our 2003 consumer survey showed that 75% of Canadians link having a financial plan/good financial planning to their well-being. Without being prompted by your planner/advisor, in the last three years have you sought the assistance of a professional to develop a financial plan?

Making sure that a CFP professional is current in maintaining all his/her licensing requirements and that everyone is using the CFP marks in an authorized and appropriate way is important. Included in the Fall 2004 FPSC Bulletin is a Guide to CFP Licensing and Marks Use. If there is someone in your organization who should have a copy of this Guide, let us know. Contact Liz Ptak at lptak@cfp-ca.org. It is also available electronically on our website in the Resources section.

In a recent search for "CFP" on the Workopolis.ca website, more than 160 positions were found. A scan through the positions revealed that CFP can mean other things outside of this industry, but of the 167 positions advertised the day we looked, 165 were looking for the Certified Financial Planner designation.
