Donald J. Johnston FCA
President FPSC
Don Johnston's background in education, private business
and association management amply equips him for his present
position working to establish financial planning as a profession
in Canada distinguished by the Certified Financial Planner™ certification.
In 1995, Mr. Johnston negotiated the much sought-after
agreement with the owners of the CFP trademarks to sub-license
the
internationally recognized marks in Canada. He brought
a traditionally disparate group of key players in the Canadian
financial services industry together in a cooperative effort
that forged the Financial Planners Standards Council into
existence in November 1995. Under Mr. Johnston's leadership,
the CFP certification program in Canada has secured, in
10
years, tremendous industry and consumer recognition as
the foundation of professionalism in financial planning.
Prior to taking on his responsibilities with FPSC, Mr.
Johnston served as Vice President and COO of the Canadian
Institute
of Financial Planning. From 1985 to 1994, he was a partner
and National Director of Education Standards at Ernst
and Young, Toronto. He was elected a Fellow in the Canadian
Institute of Chartered Accountants during his tenure
as
Professional
Practice Director of the School of Accountancy at the
University of Waterloo from 1980 to 1985. From 1975 to 1980,
he served
as Dean of Academic Studies in the School of Business
at McMaster University.
